X-Ray Shielding Construction Guide for Contractors and Installers

A shielding design becomes effective only when the specified barriers are installed continuously and match the final room and equipment layout. Contractors and shielding installers should treat the shielding documents as coordinated construction requirements, not as an isolated lead schedule.
Before ordering materials
Confirm that the equipment model, room plan, and shielding design are final.
Verify barrier material, thickness, height, extent, and location.
Compare shielding drawings with architectural, structural, MEP, and equipment-vendor documents.
Identify conflicts at doors, frames, windows, ducts, conduits, outlets, med-gas, and other penetrations.
Confirm whether jurisdictional review must be completed before construction.
Protect barrier continuity
Joints, corners, fasteners, seams, door frames, glazing frames, floor transitions, ceiling transitions, and penetrations can interrupt an otherwise correct barrier. Follow the project-specific details and coordinate overlaps rather than assuming separate trades will close the gaps.
Do not substitute materials based only on equal thickness. Different materials and assemblies do not necessarily provide equivalent attenuation.
Document the work
Record product names, thicknesses, batch or certification information when available, and installed locations.
Photograph barriers, joints, penetrations, and door-frame conditions before concealment.
Maintain a current marked plan for field changes.
Escalate discrepancies before walls or ceilings are closed.
Confirm that the installed equipment position and orientation match the design basis.
Stop and ask when inputs change
Moving the tube, gantry, table, control area, or door; changing adjacent occupancy; revising wall construction; or adding a penetration can change the recommendation. Route these changes back to the design team before continuing.
