CT and Cone-Beam CT Shielding Design Guide

CT and cone-beam CT rooms should be designed from the exact scanner, geometry, workload, technique, scatter characteristics, and adjacent occupancy. CT and CBCT are not interchangeable room labels.
Confirm the scanner configuration
Exact manufacturer and model.
Gantry orientation and isocenter location.
Scan volume and equipment travel.
Technique ranges and expected protocols.
Estimated procedures, workload, and growth.
Control-room and operator locations.
Manufacturer planning and site-preparation drawings.
Coordinate room geometry
Mark the final isocenter, gantry, table, control, doors, windows, and surrounding occupancy on a reliable plan. Small changes in scanner position or room orientation can change distances and barrier conditions.
Provide the use of spaces above and below, not only the rooms on the same floor.
Avoid generic thickness assumptions
Do not assume CT automatically needs one standard thickness or that CBCT can copy a dental or CT room. Requirements depend on the project inputs and applicable jurisdiction.
Construction and closeout
Coordinate barrier continuity at doors, frames, glazing, joints, and penetrations.
Review model or layout changes before construction continues.
Verify installed equipment location against the design basis.
Complete required survey, inspection, registration, or authorization steps before use.
